Leaders are often preoccupied with retention. The damage to the organization from rapid turnover is costly in terms of dollars of course, but also productivity, morale, quality and reputation.
Is it true that your organization emphasizes the orientation phase, then distances from the new recruit in the interest of other priorities? “Chapter 2” in an orientee’s life may be the most vulnerable to discouragement and fear of failure than the orientation phase ever was. Leading during Chapter 2 requires more involvement, conversations, and check ins. Have our leadership roles allowed for this "Chapter 2" competency? If not, the cost of turnover will continue to skyrocket.
